Field trip : "Discovering the Madina: Ancient City", led by our local expert, we start we explore this UNESCO site with stops at Zitouna Mosque, Kasbah square and the various suqs.

Coach proceeds to Carthage

Lecture : "Democracy in the Arab World" led by our local expert, we discuss the state of democracy today while enjoying coffee after lunch

Field trip : "Discovering Carthage's Ruins ", led by our local expert, we start we explore the ruins of this once great city destroyed after the Punic wars.

Lecture : " Valletta: A City Built by Gentlemen for Gentlemen", led by our local expert guide. While enjoying our dessert and coffee, we examine the History if this great Baroque City founded by the Grand Master of the Order of St John, Jean Parisot de la Valette.

Field Trip : " Discovering Valletta: UNESCO World Heritage Site", led by our local expert guide we explore the city's many sites.

Lecture : ""The Phoenicians/Canaanites", led by the Head of Department of Middle Eastern Studies, University of Malta. Originating in today's Lebanon and known as the People of the Sea, the Phoenicians are considered to be one of the main formative elements of Mediterranean culture in the first millennium B.C. They founded a series of colonies in the west and a commercial empire which extended throughout the Mediterranean.

Field Trip : " Discovering Mdina: The Silent City", led by our local expert guide we meander the narrow streets of the ancient capital of the island, known as the "Silent City" for the atmosphere of hushed quiet that usually prevails. or walk with Coordinator through Mdina and walk of approx. 1 mile to visit Grotto of St. Paul. Optional visits include 4th Century Christian catacombs and Roman Domus museum with fine mosaics and artifacts of the Roman period in Malta. (Museum admissions and other attractions as desired are at own expense.)

Free Time : Balance of morning to explore Mdina on own (maps provided), Our local Coordinator will explain meeting point and time for lunch, and remain available for assistance while participants explore at will.

Optional Excursion : walk with Coordinator through Mdina and walk 1 mile to visit the Grotto of St. Paul. Optional visits include 4th Century Christian catacombs and Roman Domus museum with fine mosaics and artifacts of the Roman period in Malta. (We need to include the cost in the program, even if some choose not to go)

Lecture : "The Three Great Monotheistic Religions of the Mediterranean" , led by our local expert, we review the socio-religious context of the Middle East and Mediterranean region with regard to the great faiths of the people of the book: Judaism, Christianity, Islam.

Lecture : “The Prehistoric Cultures of Malta”, led by our local Archaeologist. Even though this miniature island has made various other significant contributions to world heritage, there is no doubt that nothing rivals its megalithic temples. Built in the period 3600 - 2500 B.C. by a small community enjoying an extraordinary cultural efflorescence in almost complete isolation, these buildings constitute architectural feats of the highest order. They show an internal evolution in form (from the simple to the more complex,) size of stone blocks used (from small to gigantic,) and in the artistic furnishings with increasingly greater refinement and sophistication

Field Trip : "Discovering the Hagar Qim Temple Complex a UNESCO World Heriatege Site" led by our Archaeologist.The breathtaking location and advanced restoration of this temple complex make it an evocative example of the oldest free-standing monuments in the world.

Free Time : This is your chance to explore Valletta at your own pace, discover some of the museums you wanted to see or just take a relaxing stroll arounf the historic center.
